Nobody expected that the return of golf after 112 years would be faced with such a mess. Various players such as Shane Lowery, Charl Schwartzel, Jason Day, Adam Scott, all announced their withdrawal from the game. There are a number of many others expected to withdrawal from the game. Jordan Spieth is also expected to be among the players who will pull out from the game since he has been hesitant. At the press conference for the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, the 22 year old player announced that he was uncertain of whether he would engage in the game since there were a number of factors to consider before engaging in the game.
One of these factors is the major support from Coca-Cola which supports golf game in a big way. Olympic golf in all the 112 years has not has a top shot hit and the game is already suffering, despite the fact that Spieth will not be joining them. Golf will be played only in 2016 and 2020 in Tokyo and there is a possibility that after the Games, it will be dismissed just like baseball and lacrosse. People are not being blamed for their lack of zeal to go to Rio due to concerns for their family. This is because Zika virus is posing a threat though Geoff Shackelford said that the Zika virus was not connected with those building the golf course.
Mosquitoes in Brazil are few due to the winter season and since the golf course is located in a windy area of Rio the Zika mosquitoes pose no threat. Even though most golf players have withdrawn, the golf field is still quite strong. Bubba Watson, Danny Willet, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Dustin Johnson are among the top 10 players that are planning to play. The strange thing is that only men are withdrawing from the game while no woman has at the moment withdrawn. Women are ready to embrace the opportunity of taking part in the golf game and they are hoping for safety assurances.
There are various aggressive Canadian players that are likely to represent Canada in Rio. Those ready to represent them in the Maple Leaf include David Hearn and Graham DeLaet from the men’s side and Alena Sharp and Brooke Henderson from the women’s side. There is still hope that with the Olympics golf will pick off at the competitions but at the moment no golf player is willing to take that chance thus leading to the falling of golf at the Olympics.
