Canadian Women’s Soccer Team Wins The Algarve Cup

On Monday during the final of Algarve Cup, Canada won against 2-1 over Brazil. Shelina Zadorsky scored at the 60th minute, after converting Ashley Lawrence’s corner kick.

Zadorsky said that she was overwhelmed to get the first goal and she thinks that is what boosted her team’s momentum. She also said that it was a perfect ball from Ashley since she was close to the post and she is proud of the whole team for winning the cup.

Seven minutes later as pressure built up from Canadian side, Janine Beckie scored a second goal. While the Brazilian’s struggle to get their defense back on track, Sophie Schmidt passed a ball directly to Beckie, who was able to slot it past the keeper. Beckie said their defensive pressure during the entire game kept their opponents on toes.

In the 89th minute, the lead was cut by half by Brazil but they still could not find an equalizer in the added time.

The Canadian coach John Herdman said, “Since 2012 London Olympics, we have not won anything for a while and beating Brazil in the Pan Am is a hopefully a good sign for us.”

“The girls played well. They deserve it.” He added. “That was a great Brazil team they beat tonight and they have been strong in the tournament and the girls, despite the pressure scored two goals. They proved that team work really goes a long away.”

Kadeisha Buchanan from Canada was named player of the tournament.

For Canadians to Win Algarve Cup, puts them on the frontline to Rio Olympics as they look forward to better their Bronze from London in 2012. This was the first tournament for Canadian women soccer team to qualify for Rio Games byCONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship.

During the tournament, Canada soccer announced that it is going to host two of women’s soccer matches against Brazil in June 4 and June 7 at Toronto’s BMO field and Ottawa’s Td Place respectively.
