Online sports gambling thrives in Canada’s legal ‘grey zone’

Online sports gambling thrives in Canada’s legal ‘grey zone’

Every morning, every online gambler wakes up with the hope they won in one of their sports bets. Life for an online gambler, for example Steve is made up of waking early in the morning and jumping straight to their computers. Life is good for Steve on the days he manages to score some winnings after wagering a few hundred dollars on two NBA games and he wins on both of these games. He won the bets on San Antonio Spurs and the hometown Raptors. He loyally carries out research on every game, both in the morning and in the evening. However, Steve considers all these as normal; to him it is not an addiction but a way of earning extra profit. He also adds that his friends also engage in sports betting.

Funny enough most of these sports betting accounts are not in existence in Canada but are in areas such as Antigua, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man or the United Kingdom. These places are known to entice gamblers who are based in countries where sports betting is illegal, making all these quite suspicious. Since the start of internet gambling sites more than twenty years ago, Canadian authorities have not put any interest in the multi-billion-dollar project thus only allow its operation in secluded areas where it is less likely to take place. Michael Lipton who is a gaming law practitioner with Dickinson Wright in Toronto argues that the reason where sports gambling sites consider Canada as a grey area is the fact that there have been no prosecutions in the area.

The major question remains unanswered as to why the Canadian government ignores online sports betting. Lawyer Chad Finkelstein says that the reason is that the provinces in Canada that practice gambling are mostly grey zone areas and the gaming constitution laws have never been updated since the 1960s. These laws do not ban gambling in those offshore areas and if the Canadian government stopped their operation, the online bookmakers would sue them. Sports betting have also become easy as the online sports betters can deposit and withdraw their funds directly from their homes. These transactions openly happen in very big and recognized Canadian banks. Sports’ betting is even a major contributor of profits to most of these banks.

In Canada players are able to wager up to $4 billion annually though the sports books located in Europe or in other places of the world. This is according to the vice president of the Canadian Gaming Association, Paul Burns.Lipton agrees that sports betting could be a huge contributor of revenues for the Canadian government.

Nevada sports betting can be a $5 billion industry soon

Nevada sports betting can be a $5 billion industry soon

Back in the 1970s Super Bowl week used to experience very little attention, Jimmy Vaccaro who has witnessed four decades as a Las Vegas bookmaker explains. He was very astonished to witness massive crowds of people buying tickets for the Super Bowl game in February and March. The sports betting figures in Nevada was at $2.4 billion in 2006, $3 billion in 2012 and then went to $4.2 billion in 2015. The figures are expected to rise to $5 billion in 2016. The senior research analyst for the Gaming Control Board, Michael Lawton said that the $5 billion estimate would be very much possible with the way things were being witnessed. He said that the sports betting in Nevada was growing stronger each day, mobile phone applications and mainstream media being the major contributors to the growth.

Sports’ betting in Nevada is being aided by various factors including mobile apps, convectional and social media interest, the increase of in-game and proposition gambling fantasy sports’ popularity, the Las Vegas book advancement and the increase in some of the economical and societal factors. In the recent years, the great gaming events have been attracting so much attention. From the Super Bowl games, the NCCA Tournament and the great fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao. This was backed up by Matthew Holt who is the president of CG Technology sports books. Even though some of the sports betting activities such as Pinnacle are being held in America, the average person cannot wager using a credit card.

The amount of revenue generated by these underground bookmakers in the U.S is up to $400 billion. Nevada is becoming quite popular with revenue of up to $5 billion. This has been attributed to advances in technology with CG Technology and William Hill sports leading the way. The mobile phone app also increased the number of people who engage in sports betting. Vaccaro added that over 100 customers signed up for the mobile application during the NCCA Tournament. This was also backed up by Jay Kornegay who is the Westgate sports book director. In the recent times, finding a sports book with no mobile app is very difficult. According to Roxborough in the late 1990s sports books were facing challenges from casinos but this has changed.

Sports bookmakers are becoming quite noticeable in the sports betting areas in games such as baseball, golf, hockey, and military games. The state gaming rules are also slacking to elevate sports betting. The Senate Bill 443 was also signed thus allowing business premises in Nevada to allow investors to place bets in behalf of investors from all over the world.

Nevada Could make $5B in 2016

Nevada Could make $5B in 2016

A report published by the Las Vegas Review journal states that the Nevada sports betting handle is estimated to reach over $5 billion dollars in 2016. This will be due to the record handle in March. The constant progress of Nevada sports betting has come at a time when legislators on Capitol Hill are starting to feel pressure as they prepare to amend the existing sports betting laws. A federal act put in place in 1992 restricts sports betting to very few states. Nevada is the only jurisdiction that allows the sports betting activity.

In March, the Sports Books in Nevada recorded an amount of $458 million in bets. This was after recording $363 million in total bets on February and around $450 million that was gambled in January. This was a previous record amount. In 2015, Nevada Sports books recorded $4.2 billion in wager amounts which was the greatest amount recorded for Silver State casino industry. This was the only time that the handle ever went further than $4 billion. 5.47% of the betting amount was won by Nevada and the $231.8 million in revenue was the greatest amount for the sports books. The sports betting locations had increased from 190 in the previous year to 196 in 2015.

In total the gaming revenue for Nevada was $11,114,081,000 where sports betting had 2.095 of the total gaming win. Research from the University of Nevada Las Vegas showed that was one of the greatest revenues ever made. The sports betting’s increase has come at a period in which sports win as a percentage of the cumulative Nevada casino industry is at the lowest level. Nevada gaming watchdogs and sports betting are looking for a way that gamblers can use their online betting accounts to some degree when they are outside of Silver State. This is in preparation for a possible future of authorized and controlled gambling countrywide.

Sports’ betting is becoming acceptable in many places and the NFL quest of taking his team to Las Vegas has led the NFL to recognize that their ant-gambling position is changing.

Crownbet gets fined for not adhering to NSW laws on advertising

The Australian online bookmaker, CrownBet AUS has been charged $20, 000 for going against the advertising laws on the promotion of the gambling services. The fine has been issued by the Liquor and Gaming Board of New South Wales. They were convicted with five charges in regards to publishing information that enticed consumers into gambling. The information was uploaded in its website and featured various bonus rewards offers for the AFL Grand Final, NBA and the Melbourne Cup. Bookmakers are under strict warning from the NSW betting regulations and are not allowed to publish promotions or enticing materials that allow gambling.

The NWS does not also allow the use of customer credit in promoting gambling. Vouchers and sign up rewards are also prohibited by their regulations. The Crownbet NRL and AFL campaign on ‘The Game Just Changed’ had been under investigation by the NSW watchdog. It was a multi- content advert that promoted Crownbet reward points by encouraging consumers to place bets. This was a very serious mistake. They also put strong enticing words on their website stating that; “There is nothing like it, start earning points now.”

The management of Crownbet online bookmaker did not deny the five charges and announced that it was aware and respected the laws set aside by the NSW betting regulations. The management also showed disappointment to the internal administrative mistakes that brought about the breaking of rules. The Crownbet management has also been working hand in hand with the Office of liquor and gaming in improving its various processes and various structures that will make sure that they comply with the various laws.

The NSW Liquor and Gaming Board had earlier on in 2015 warned against enticements that bookmakers made on bonus rewards. They had promised to take serious action against all bookmakers advertising gambling materials.
