Serena Slam weekend: Serena wins title at Wimbledon

On Saturday, Serena Williams made history after defeating Garbine Muguruza in southwest London. Muguruza, who is a promising Spaniard lost 6-4 6-4 to Williams, giving Williams four straight major wins for the second time in her career.

“It is unbelievable that I am standing here with another Serena slam.” Williams told the crowd, emulating her 2002-2003 achievement.

Given that Serena is a three-time defending champion and without a doubt if she excels in September at the US Open, she will become the first player in history to achieve the calendar-year grand slam since Steffi Graf in 1988.

At 33, Serena beats Martina Navratilova as the oldest woman to win grand slam in the Open Era by four weeks.

21-year-old Muguruza, who was appearing on the grand slam final for the first time, wept in her chair after defeat. However, she should not feel very disappointed. This is because; it is very rare for Serena to lose at the grand slam.

However, Muguruza did not walk away submissively. In fact, she made matters fascinating after losing 5-1 in the second, winning a great number of new fans with her outstanding performance at the tennis’ grandest arena.

“I would like to congratulate Serena for showing us that is the world’s No 1,” Muguruza said.

Even though Muguruza began stronger, she did not play like it due to nervousness.

On the contrary, on the first game, Williams struck 3 of her 8 double faults and the delight of those gathered at the Centre court shattered her. In fact, Williams was troubled by Muguruza’s powerful serve and groundstrokes in early stages.

However, it was a matter of games before Williams awoke her energy as she was determined to do better than last year.

“Garbine played so well,” Williams said. “It did not occur to me that the game was over because she was fighting so hard.”

After the game, the two hugged at the net, Williams bobbled in happiness as she approached her chair.
