Broncos’ DeMarcus Ware will be returning for practice

Broncos’ DeMarcus Ware will be returning for practice

OLB DeMarcus Ware will be returning to practice according to his head coach Gary Kubiak. The coach also gave updates on other injured players and said that Aqib Talib will be playing on Sunday. DeMarcus spent the entire training camp on the non-football injury list because of a back injury. According to his coach’s report on Monday, the player is ready to return to practice. He also added that Ware is scheduled to go off the NFL and he is expecting a walkthrough which Ware will be part of. Ware is focused on fine-tuning his preparation for the start of the regular season since his back is now feeling better.

Ware gave a statement on Monday where he said that his back was now feeling better and he was very focused in going back to the playing field. According to Per9News in Denver, Ware will begin practice earlier in the week. He had not been practicing with his team since February during the Super Bowl games. Broncos will not be expecting much from Ware anytime soon since DeMarcus Ware will have two weeks to make begin full practice. His other Broncos team members are glad that he will be making a return to the team. Ware is following players such as Packers in his linebacker Julius Peppers in the NFL sack list. However, there is a lot to look forward to in Denver.

Ware is not the only player that is expected to comeback after an injury. According to Kubiak, Aqib Talib is making an appearance after making a recovery from a gunshot wound and he is expected to play against the Rams on Saturday. Other injured players that will be coming back to the field according to Kubiak include Ty Sambrailo who had a hyperextended right elbow which happened on July 31st. Corey Nelson also suffered from a sprained wrist and he is also expected back in the field. Jeff Heuerman who also suffered from a hamstring injury is reported to be doing just fine. Another player, Taurean Nixon has missed various training sessions but his injuries remain undisclosed. He will be back to the field on Tuesday according to Kubiak.

Haruki Namaruki, Former NFL player in court over concussion claim

Haruki Namaruki, Former NFL player in court over concussion claim

A re-known former NFL player, Haruki Namakura sued the Llyod’s of London this week after they denied his concussion claim. The former player suffered what is said to be a career ending injury in 2013 during the Carolina’s Exhibition V Steelers. He had purchased a $1million insurance policy in 2012 right before the season with panthers. Since his concussion, the player is yet to collect on the policy hence the law suit against his insurer.

Given his status as a professional athlete, this suit could become the landmark case for athletes seeking reimbursement from insurance companies after injuries especially concussions and head traumas. The suit was filed on Monday in North Carolina.

The August 2013 concussion rendered Haruki Namaruka fully and permanently disabled. The NFL awarded him total and permanent disability benefits consequent to his retirement following post-concussion symptoms. He will therefore be receiving $10,000 monthly in benefits. He had suffered post-concussion symptoms but according to the Lloyd’s medical expert ruling in 2015, he was fir to play. This was contrary to a diagnosis by a specialist at the University of Pittsburg  Medical Center.

The former NFL player’s attempts to recover on the policy was unfruitful as the insurance company has been stalling. It is alleged that the Lloyd’s of London pulled a stunt most insurance companies pull by burying the former player in endless bureaucracies and loads of paperwork. Their spokeswoman also declined to comment on the suit stating that it is against their policy to comment on pending law suits.

Haruki Namaruka played defensive back for the panthers when he took the hit on his head that led to a concussion. His claim will be the first to be rejected by an insurance company even after an NFL medical expert has declared his concussion a ‘career ending injury’. The policy taken out in 2012 was intended to be a hedge against a career ending injury. He is seeking $3million in the suit.

Studies from the Congress indicate that NFL attempted to Influence research on Concussion

Studies from the Congress indicate that NFL attempted to Influence research on Concussion

The National Institutes of Health backed up the idea of the N.F.L agreeing to contribute tens of millions of dollars to concussion research as they saw this as an opportunity of reducing the permanent effects of head injuries on players. The N.F.L agreed to this decision back in 2012 and they agreed to have no control over how the funds were to be used.  However, the N.F.L officials were overly corrupt and tried all means of hiring their own doctor according to a congressional committee which released its research on Monday. The N.F.L denied these accusations in a statement carried out by Democratic members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

The N.F.L has a long history of trying to mishandle concussion research which goes way back to the time when they first decided to follow up on crisis by using faulty information to come up with various studies. According to Dr. Richard Ellenbogen’s research in 2013 who proposed to carry out the research on how the funds were being used and later on petitioned to dishonor the findings of Dr. Stern who had initially being given credit on that work. Nothing much has changed over the last years, Dr. Elliot Pelliman who was the leader of the league’s concussion committee is still present though his work was dishonored since his study was suspicious and he never came out to support the permanent effects of head injuries on players.

Recent members of the committee include, Dr. Richard Ellenbogen who discredited the research findings of Dr. Robert Stern, who is a Boston neurologist. Others include Representative Frank Pallone Jr. of New Jersey who supervised the study and accused the N.F.L of trying to negatively influence research that they agreed to fund and then leave the rest to the research team. According to Mr. Pallone the disagreements between the N.F.L and the N.I.H arise due to the attempts made by the N.F.L to interfere with the research conducted on life-long effects of head injuries. ESPN were the original reporters of the results of the study, and also critiqued the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health for failing to adequately defend the relationship between N.I.H and the N.F.L.
