Online sports gambling thrives in Canada’s legal ‘grey zone’

Online sports gambling thrives in Canada’s legal ‘grey zone’

Every morning, every online gambler wakes up with the hope they won in one of their sports bets. Life for an online gambler, for example Steve is made up of waking early in the morning and jumping straight to their computers. Life is good for Steve on the days he manages to score some winnings after wagering a few hundred dollars on two NBA games and he wins on both of these games. He won the bets on San Antonio Spurs and the hometown Raptors. He loyally carries out research on every game, both in the morning and in the evening. However, Steve considers all these as normal; to him it is not an addiction but a way of earning extra profit. He also adds that his friends also engage in sports betting.

Funny enough most of these sports betting accounts are not in existence in Canada but are in areas such as Antigua, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man or the United Kingdom. These places are known to entice gamblers who are based in countries where sports betting is illegal, making all these quite suspicious. Since the start of internet gambling sites more than twenty years ago, Canadian authorities have not put any interest in the multi-billion-dollar project thus only allow its operation in secluded areas where it is less likely to take place. Michael Lipton who is a gaming law practitioner with Dickinson Wright in Toronto argues that the reason where sports gambling sites consider Canada as a grey area is the fact that there have been no prosecutions in the area.

The major question remains unanswered as to why the Canadian government ignores online sports betting. Lawyer Chad Finkelstein says that the reason is that the provinces in Canada that practice gambling are mostly grey zone areas and the gaming constitution laws have never been updated since the 1960s. These laws do not ban gambling in those offshore areas and if the Canadian government stopped their operation, the online bookmakers would sue them. Sports betting have also become easy as the online sports betters can deposit and withdraw their funds directly from their homes. These transactions openly happen in very big and recognized Canadian banks. Sports’ betting is even a major contributor of profits to most of these banks.

In Canada players are able to wager up to $4 billion annually though the sports books located in Europe or in other places of the world. This is according to the vice president of the Canadian Gaming Association, Paul Burns.Lipton agrees that sports betting could be a huge contributor of revenues for the Canadian government.

Nevada Could make $5B in 2016

Nevada Could make $5B in 2016

A report published by the Las Vegas Review journal states that the Nevada sports betting handle is estimated to reach over $5 billion dollars in 2016. This will be due to the record handle in March. The constant progress of Nevada sports betting has come at a time when legislators on Capitol Hill are starting to feel pressure as they prepare to amend the existing sports betting laws. A federal act put in place in 1992 restricts sports betting to very few states. Nevada is the only jurisdiction that allows the sports betting activity.

In March, the Sports Books in Nevada recorded an amount of $458 million in bets. This was after recording $363 million in total bets on February and around $450 million that was gambled in January. This was a previous record amount. In 2015, Nevada Sports books recorded $4.2 billion in wager amounts which was the greatest amount recorded for Silver State casino industry. This was the only time that the handle ever went further than $4 billion. 5.47% of the betting amount was won by Nevada and the $231.8 million in revenue was the greatest amount for the sports books. The sports betting locations had increased from 190 in the previous year to 196 in 2015.

In total the gaming revenue for Nevada was $11,114,081,000 where sports betting had 2.095 of the total gaming win. Research from the University of Nevada Las Vegas showed that was one of the greatest revenues ever made. The sports betting’s increase has come at a period in which sports win as a percentage of the cumulative Nevada casino industry is at the lowest level. Nevada gaming watchdogs and sports betting are looking for a way that gamblers can use their online betting accounts to some degree when they are outside of Silver State. This is in preparation for a possible future of authorized and controlled gambling countrywide.

Sports’ betting is becoming acceptable in many places and the NFL quest of taking his team to Las Vegas has led the NFL to recognize that their ant-gambling position is changing.

No more Greyhound Racing in Arizona

No more Greyhound Racing in Arizona

The new legislation which is soon to be signed by Governor Doung Ducey will lead to the end of American’s notorious Greyhound parks. The Tucson Greyhound Park in Arizona will be the 39th park to be shut down thus banning them from carrying out the cruel malpractice. Christine Dorchac who is the president of Grey2K USA announced that they had been working on the legislation for over 10 years. She said this on the Arizona Daily Star, and also referred The Tucson Greyhound Park as a death trap for dogs.

The Greyhound forces dogs to endure very harsh conditions. They do this for the sake of leisure and earnings. The dogs were not allowed any social contact or adequate medical care. They used to live in crates for over 20 hours a day, with inadequate space. The crates also did not have proper air conditioning. The dogs had awful mouth sores and parasites since they were always muzzled. The living environment was also very unbearable making it very easy for infectious to spread. The extreme temperatures in the cages caused very many dog deaths over the previous years.

Greyhound racing has not been attracting the public as much as it was in the past. This is because the public became aware of the inhumane practices that were being carried out on these animals. There was a decline of over 68% of the total amount gambled on Greyhound racing between 2001 and 2013. This was according to statistics carried out by Grey 2K USA. The closing down of the Greyhound racing by Arizona has steered a lot of excitement. There are over 300 to 400 dogs awaiting adoption. The animals are being sort for forever homes. The Arizona Greyhound Rescue is looking to train for the service dogs’ position through the Heartfelt Hounds program.

There is a rescue program for dogs that is found by going to the Grey 2K USA page. They also have a Facebook page that advocates for the rights of these suffering racing dogs.

LGA urges UK government to reduce FOBTs wagering to £2

LGA urges UK government to reduce FOBTs wagering to £2

The government is being pressed by the UK cross- party council organization and the Local Government Association (LGA) to decrease the maximum betting amount on fixed odds betting terminals (FOBT) from £100 to £2. The MP’S are being requested by the LGA to support an instant government assessment on UK FOBTs policy. The LGA aims to decrease possible risks to susceptible gambling customers. There will be increase in the influence tests as stated by the council organization. This will enable councils to discard bookmaker applications in the UK areas deemed to have increased betting shop densities.

Additional requirements that have been aired by the LGA include pursuing the councils to contemplate on anti- social, community health and crime factors in the revision of recent bookmaker licensing. The UK casinos are also another target of the LGA, where the machine wagering amount is set to be reduced to £5 stakes.  Customers’ placing bets over £50 on B2 machines were put under supervision; this was done according to the government rules to UK bookmaker operations in April, 2015. Research conducted by the LGA shows that there are over 34, 500 FOBTs in the UK where players can place bets of £100 in each single spin of roulette wheel which lasts for 20 seconds.

According to Simon Blackburn, the Chair of the LGA’s Safer and Stronger Communities board, the councils in whole country are concerned about the numbers of the increased bets FOBTs and the gambling shops on the high streets and have been upset by the shortage of powers they have to do away with.  He also added that the increased incentives on FOBTs are generally out of place when compared with other high class street betting machines. The machines were exposing customers to harm and there was also anti-social behavior causing countrywide concern.

The Association of British Bookmakers did not take all the LGA’s claims too well and defended themselves stating that the UK bookmakers were one of the safest places for gamblers. The government came up with a final verdict last July and decided to leave stakes and prizes fixed on gaming machines. The local authorities have enough powers through the licensing process to make use of the available gambling shops on the streets, added the British Bookmakers.

Asmussen cleared to be selected in the Hall of Fame

Asmussen cleared to be selected in the Hall of Fame

Back in 2014, the People for Ethical treatment of Animals went to court to sue trainer Steve Asmussen for charges on animal cruelty and mistreat. This prompted the Hall of Fame in eradicating his name from the main contenders of the inclusion in the Hall of Fame. Nonetheless, these charges were dropped and brought a new beginning for Asmussen who now is eligible to take part in the final listing for the top awards in the Hall of Fame calendar year.

Two times has Asmussen scooped the Eclipse Award winner for Outstanding Trainer and conditioner of Horse of the Years Curlin and Rachel Alexandra. This was followed by a recent break through after one of his own horses Untapable scooped the 2014 Kentucky Oaks. Asmussen is currently ranked second in the all-time winning as a trainer in the US after he achieved the 7,000 win mark last year.

Investigation conducted undercover by Kentucky investigators could not verify the accusations made by PETA which prompted the New York State Gaming Commission in clearing Asmussen from the charges. However, he would be found guilty of directing the use of thyroxin hormone to his horses two days before the races.

It was during this investigation by the New York and Kentucky investigation that his Hall of Fame matter was put into consideration. In the end, Asmussen was cleared to vie in the hall in Saratoga Springs in New York. He will be among other trainers who have been operation for at least 25 years including Shug McGaughey, Bob Baffert and D. Wayne Lukas.

However, the case is yet to be over as on Tuesday the PETA senior vice president Kathy Guillermo claimed that they had clear prove that shows Asmussen injecting his horses with sedatives and other drugs which kept them running on daily basis. And for this reason, he went against the new legislation to protect horses from drug abuse and thus would be fined $10,000 by the New York State Gaming Commission.
