Greyhound death toll at 1,600 dogs in Tasmania for the past 3 years

According to the government figures obtained by the Greens, there were about 1600 racing greyhounds that were reported to have died in Tasmania over the last three years. This also included 500 others the cause being that they were not suitable for racing. 488 deaths were caused by injury while the other 400 got destroyed since they were not suitable for re-homing. This was shown in a document from the Department of Primary Industries. There were 9 dogs that were killed in as single day sometimes early in the year in North West, while other 30 dogs were killed on a single day in Launceston in 2013.

All retired greyhounds will be re-homed unless there are cases of health or behavioral issues. This is according to the greyhound racing committee announcement made on Monday. Andrea Dawkins the Greens MP reported that these figures were disgusting to look at. She stated that this kind of act was uncalled for. All the government officials were against the euthanizing of dogs. According to Mr Rockliff an adoption program is being funded for about $248,000 and they are looking forward to building an adoption facility. He also added that there are programs that are dedicated to the re-homing of greyhounds.

A 55% reduction has been noted in Tasmania over the last 12 months in matters relating to the numbers of greyhound being whelped. Premier Will Hodgman is confident that the number of greyhounds’ deaths will be reduced in future. He is confident that by 2019 all greyhounds will have a new home. Tasmania has objected the banning of greyhound sports as declared from next July. These NSW ban was put into to enforcement due to the increased number of killings, live baiting and animal cruelty. Greyhound bill has been taken to Baird parliament

Greyhound bill has been taken to Baird parliament

The main reason why the Baird government is facing accusations of being undemocratic is because they are fast tracking the passage of the controversial legislation meant to ban greyhound racing through NSW Parliament. The legislation is due to be introduced to the upper house on Wednesday by Liberal MP Duncan Gay who has successfully sought to make the government’s Greyhound Racing Prohibition Bill as urgent. According to Labor Peter Primrose this move is an embarrassment since the copy of the legislation was made available 10 minutes before parliamentary proceedings. He added that proceedings in parliament have been abused. He complained that they had not being given time to go through the bill.

A maximum fine of $11,000 will be charged to those caught organizing a greyhound race after July next year. This will also warrant a one year jail term according to the proposed new laws. An administrator who will be in charge of winding up the greyhound industry by July 1st next year will be appointed by the government. In the meanwhile the administrator will also manage the affairs of Greyhound Racing NSW. They are yet to set an exact date to end greyhound breeding. Luke Foley says that he will reverse the ban if he is elected come 2019. He is also opposed to the idea that those affected by the bill will not be compensated. He added that banning greyhound racing would affect the livelihood of too many people.

Mehreen Faruqi who is part of the Greens promised that she would do all that it takes to make sure that the racing tracks and public land that belonged to Greyhound Racing NSW would remain unsold. She was happy that the government was planning to ban the sport. There are some three MPs who are from Baird government that are not in support of the bill but will not either vote against the government. Fishers and Farmers Party, Labor, the Shooters, and the Christian Democrats’ Fred Nile are against the government but with the Greens’ support the bill will have safe passage to the lower house. There will be continued discussion on the legislation late on Wednesday night.

The fine has been issued by the Liquor and Gaming Board of New South Wales. They were convicted with five charges in regards to publishing information that enticed consumers into gambling. The information was uploaded in its website and featured various bonus rewards offers for the AFL Grand Final, NBA and the Melbourne Cup. Bookmakers are under strict warning from the NSW betting regulations and are not allowed to publish promotions or enticing materials that allow gambling.

The NWS does not also allow the use of customer credit in promoting gambling. Vouchers and sign up rewards are also prohibited by their regulations. The Crownbet NRL and AFL campaign on ‘The Game Just Changed’ had been under investigation by the NSW watchdog. It was a multi- content advert that promoted Crownbet reward points by encouraging consumers to place bets. This was a very serious mistake. They also put strong enticing words on their website stating that; “There is nothing like it, start earning points now.”

The management of Crownbet online bookmaker did not deny the five charges and announced that it was aware and respected the laws set aside by the NSW betting regulations. The Officials of Greyhound Racing Refuse To Hand over Names Of Suspected Live Baiters To The Inquiry

The Officials of Greyhound Racing Refuse To Hand over Names Of Suspected Live Baiters To The Inquiry

According to the Inquiry, the officials of Greyhound racing NSW have refused to submit information of individual involved in live baiting to RSPCA due to privacy concerns.

The stewards of greyhound racing were told to “downplay” greyhound injuries and deaths to avoid negative publicity, the inquiry into the greyhound racing industry heard.

The special commission in charge of greyhound racing was told that the diary, which contained “valuable information”, was taken during a raid in February, 2015 on an anonymous trainer who was suspected of using live animals to train greyhounds in his property in Sydney.

David O’Shannessy, who is RSPCA’s chief inspector, told the commission of inquiry on Thursday that the society had asked Greyhound racing NSW to pinpoint the people in the diary that had a list of Christina names alongside telephone numbers.

David said the racing organization was not going to assist in the case unless they received a formal notice that prompt them to release the information.

On the other hand, RSPCA did not think it was necessary in the circumstances and did not want to be seen doing anything that will jeopardize any awaiting court cases.

The special commission was setup following last year’s scandal on live baiting that forced the industry to shake up.

The former CEO of Greyhound racing NSW, Brent Hogan alongside other board members had to step down from their positions after the scandal broke.

The inquiry was told that the stewards of greyhound racing were told to “cease” from offering too much information regarding injuries and deaths of greyhounds, because the industry was going to be affected by negative publicity.

The chief inspector of RSPCA said they had received a number of complaints within a year regarding greyhounds but the number rose to 100 in 2015 after the exposure of live baiting. With regards to that, the CEO of greyhound was recalled to provide evidence to the inquiry.

Greyhound Racing: Former CEO Of NSW Admits To Avoiding Negative Scrutiny

Greyhound Racing: Former CEO Of NSW Admits To Avoiding Negative Scrutiny

Brent Hogan, the former head of Greyhound Racing NSW isproviding evidence at the special commission of Inquiry in the next two days concerning the high rates of Greyhound injuries and poor welfare standards in the industry. The Inquiry already heard that the Officials played down the injuries in order to avoid negative publicity and no deaths were reported.

Mr Hogan stepped down as Greyhound’s Racing NSW CEO last year due to the wake of Four Corners on live baiting.

An email was sent to Commissioner MicaherMcHugh from the chief steward of GRNSW which urged the officials to downplay the injuries of the dogs in post-race events to avoid negativity. The mail suggested that a broken leg can be referred to as an injured leg.

According to the suggested policy, if a dog was put down after a race, it is only the injury that will be reported and not the death itself. As such, this policy misled the public and therefore policy change was necessary.

Mr Hogan told the commission that the change of policy was intended only to make it easier for steward’s report and make the language consistent.

According to the commissioner, it appears to him that the policy was made deliberately to excite the interest of animal welfare groups.

“ Do you agree that this policy mislead the public?” the commissioner asked.

Mr Hogan replied, “Looking back to it, Yes.”

The commission has previously been told that up to 17,000 dogs were not allowed to race because they were not good enough. In fact, every month, over 600 greyhounds are reported to be injured in Australia, suffering from different and serious bone fractures as well as musculoskeletal injuries.

“Nonetheless, it is clear that the controlling bodies have failed to keep and also publish comprehensive injury reports,” Stephen Rushton, the assisting counsel to the inquiry said.
